Episode 4: Black Lives Matter Pre-Listening Vocabulary

Long time no see! We are back with an amazing interview with Amanda!!!Join us as we discuss Black Lives Matter. This will be a 2-part podcast. The first part will go over vocabulary and the second part will be the actual interview.

This is a very important topic that needs to be discussed on a regular basis. The way that people of color, especially Black people are being and have been treated by the police, by schools, by banks and other systems is inhumane and absolutely horrendous. Black lives Matter. They have always mattered. It should not even be a discussion. We need a serious systemic change in order to actually change.

Vocabulary list

Black Lives Matter: the idea that we need to recognize that the black community needs our attention and there is a problem with the way that Black people are being treated and a real need to focus on the racism that continues to exist towards black people.

Be considered less than (expression with Be): to be thought of as lower 

Many people are considered less than in the US.



Manifest as (verb): Appears as / looks like 

The illness first manifested itself as severe stomach pains.



Be in the midst of (noun):  in the middle of/ in the process of

We are in the midst of a pandemic. 



Iteration( noun): a version/ a repetition of a process

The software is on its fifth iteration



Systemic (adjective): part of a system

There are many systemic issues in the U.S.



Perpetuate (verb): to keep something alive/ continue 

Trump’s speeches are perpetuating hate and racism. 



Mass incarceration (noun): put a lot of people in jail 

(incarcerate: to put in jail)

A big issue in the U.S. is the mass incarceration of people of color, especially black people.



Humanize (verb): make human 

Police dehumanize people of color when they beat and attack them in public. 



Privilege (noun):  to be able to get something because of your position in society

White privilege is the ability to do everyday things and not be attacked by the police. 



Intersectionality (noun): looks at the advantages and disadvantages that are felt by people due to a combination of factors-

The theory of intersectionality looks at the different ways in which racial and gender oppression are experienced



Tipping point (noun): the point where things start to change. 

We hope that we are at a tipping point in the U.S.
